Three Arkansas police officers have been suspended following social media outrage over a video that seemingly shows them assaulting a suspect under arrest.
Crawford County Sheriff Jimmy Damante said two county deputies and a Mulberry officer have been suspended.
A statement from Crawford County Sheriff’s Office said: “In reference to the video circulating social media involving two Crawford County Deputies, we have requested that Arkansas State Police conduct the investigation and the Deputies have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
“I hold all my employees accountable for their actions and will take appropriate measures in this matter.”
Arkansas Governor of Asa Hutchinson tweeted: “I have spoken with Col. Bill Bryant of the Arkansas State Police and the local arrest incident in Crawford County will be investigated pursuant to the video evidence and the request of the prosecuting attorney.”
Police said when the officers confronted the man on Sunday morning, he pushed a deputy to the ground and punched the back of his head, leading to his arrest.
A video shows three officers on top of the suspect, sometimes striking him with clenched fists.
Police said the man was taken to a local hospital.
He faces charges of terroristic threatening, resisting arrest and other assault charges.
